#SnippetSunday I have a job for someone…. #freeread #fantasy

Welcome to October! Time for pumpkin spice, black cats and witches. It’s also time for classic spooky stories. Which are your favorite movies? IT. The Shining. Nightmare On Elm Street, or maybe more along the lines of Hocus Pocus?

And is the Nightmare Before Christmas a Christmas movie or a Halloween movie? Such deep questions for a cool autumn weekend.

Now on to our snippet for this week. More from our Huntress – Falin. With Cara and her companions captured and a Culling expected…

“Priestess Sorchia.” Falin placed her hand over her heart and bowed deeply with respect and love. “A gift of rabbits,” she boasted.

“My favorite. As you well know.” She peered intently at Falin. “Is this a bribe for some as yet undiscovered crime?”

“Sorchia, you wound me. I walk the straight and narrow every day,” Falin said with a knowing smile.

Sorchia snorted with skepticism. “As you say. Why don’t you clean them for us to share. I have something to ask you.”

Falin chuckled as she threw a leg over the bench and dropped the carcasses on the seat in front of her.

Sorchia raised an eyebrow. “Is something amusing?”

“When you busy me with kitchen work, I know you’re going to say something I won’t like.” Falin bent to her task, wielding her knife with sharp sure cuts.

Sorchia smiled wordlessly

“I’m right, aren’t I?” Falin’s green eyes twinkled merrily.

“Perhaps it will be happy news.”

“Oh, Mother’s love, now I know it’s bad. All right, out with it. Don’t wait and ruin my dinner.” Falin finished stripping the skins and stopped to stare expectantly at the older woman.

“I have a job for someone. And you might actually want it.”

“Liar,” Falin scoffed.

Cara is a prisoner. The sorceror Sidonius crippled her soul so he could one day steal her magic. Her whole life spent in seclusion, Cara knows nothing except obedience and duty. She doesn’t have the strength to leave the sorcerer until she meets the captain.

Khoury is a Captain of Swords, kidnapped by Sidonius as food for the man’s dark magic. An exile with his own dark secret, he uses Cara to escape only to find himself bound by a need to protect her. Is it just her magic calling to his? Or something more?

Falin is not yet a Huntress of Foresthaven. Brutal and cold, she is the first to respond when men are discovered trespassing the sacred forest. When the Mothers give her a task that will mark her as a traitor, she must choose between her old life and a new destiny.

As they flee Sidonius, his influence follows them from the frozen tundra through Foresthaven to the mountain city of Iolair where Cara must face Sidonius again. The three must work together to stop Sidonius from sacrificing them to an even darker power.

  1. I don’t think it would be wise for someone to busy me with kitchen work if they’re going to say something I don’t like, particularly if I’ll be holding a knife. 😉

    1. Well obviously there’s a lot of love or at least respect between this women 🙂 otherwise, yeah, I wouldn’t irritate Falin while she’s armed. .. which is pretty much all the time.

  2. Enjoyed the snippet, obviously these two characters know each other well! I’m glad you spared us the gory details of how exactly the rabbit carcasses got dealt with BTW.

  3. Practical Magic and Beetlejiuce. And I won’t say anything about the snippet because I’ve read this book (more than once) and I know what’s coming. 🙂
